Which Training Group am I In?

Depending on how much contact you have with children, young people or parents, and how much responsibility you have for child protection within your organisation, you will need different levels of training.

Training Group A

“I come into limited contact with children, young people and/or adults who are parents /carers”

Group A workers have limited contact with children, young people and with their parents/carers.

Group A has a responsibility to contribute to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children in the community but does not necessarily have specific organisational responsibilities.

Examples of Workers in Group A:

  • Back-office Staff (use databases and systems but no direct contact with children and families)
  • Benefits Workers
  • Environmental Health Officers
  • GP Receptionists
  • Groundspeople / Estates
  • Housing Officers – some (see Group B)
  • Hospital Support Staff (with no direct  contact with children & families)
  • Librarians
  • Local Taxation Officers
  • Pharmacists
  • Recreation Assistants
  • School Administrative Staff
  • School Caretakers, Cooks, Cleaners
  • School Specialist & Technical Staff

Training Group B

“I work regularly with children, young people and/or adults who are parents/carers in the course of my work”

Group B consists of people who work regularly with children and young people and adults who are parents/carers.  

Group B has considerable professional and organisational responsibility for safeguarding and promoting children and young people’s welfare and has to be able to act on welfare concerns and to contribute appropriately to safeguarding processes.

Group B needs the skills and knowledge to manage effectively the interface between themselves and those from Group A, who may approach them with concerns about a child’s welfare, and Group C, to whom referrals will be addressed.

Training Group C

“I have particular responsibility for safeguarding children and child protection in the course of my work”

Group C has particular responsibilities for safeguarding and child protection.

They hold professional or organisational authority and a substantial degree of personal responsibility and autonomy to act on children and young people’s welfare concerns.

They work extensively within a multi-agency context and often have responsibility for the work of others.
